Ravelry

I'm knitting4sanity on ravelry. If I know you, please friend me!

I was showing ravelry to my husband last night, and he was not impressed. "That's a social engineering website" he says. OK, so I guess since I am not out there dating, I was unaware of the social engineering movement. I'm glad that I came out from under that rock.

Ravelry is the coolest thing since glass needles, in my book.

Um, o.k. - I'm with you! Ravelry is a ton of fun! Maybe later on you can explain to me what the spouse means when he says, "social engineering." ;-)

Does this mean that Ravelry is our Brave New World, and fiber is our "Soma". For those not familar with the book, research online defines Soma in the Brave New World as: "the use of soma, a powerful drug taken to escape pain and bad memories through hallucinatory fantasies".

Hallucinatory fantasies? Does that mean you think I am hallucinating about finishing all of the projects in my queue?

LOL! That may just be it, for most of us. I think for me it's the hallucination that if I finish a project my stash will actually be less. When, in fact, I have accumulated what I used in the project + some in the time it took to do the project.

Wow, what a lot of knitting has been going on over here! I just didn't keep up...

About the social engineering--could we have more of an explanation? Or do I have to go to a dating site to see what your husband means? (my husband would not be pleased about that one!) I think I'll stick with ravelry..

I don't think your dear hubby fully understands Ravelry! The social engineering aspects are only half of it. Not only can you connect with others through groups and lists of friends, etc. But you can also organize your stash, books, needles, projects, etc. So it's a useful tool for yourself. And of course, the best thing of all for me, you can gather information on yarns and patterns. See sweaters on actual people who aren't models! Find out what other people have done with those two skeins of cashmerino aran. Find out how Lorna's works in cabled patterns, etc. It's so amazing!

perhaps we are all hallucinating. i'd just settle for being able to finish one thing at the moment.

Tell him it's not "social engineering" but a "social networking" site. Social engineering is when someone it tricked into clicking or doing something they shouldn't and is more of a security thing. Social networking site is different and is more community based. Tell him it's Facebook for the knit and crochet crowd and at least it's not Twitter or Jaiku (that just got out by Google as a matter of fact).

Just last week someone asked if the security folks on a list if they wouldn't want to start a Linked in section and you would have thought it was like a dirty word or something.

Um, if that's social engineering, then I'm all for it. Pass the soma please.
